Easy- Up Ray Peters Trail and down Mini Corners

June 2nd, 2009 · 2 Comments · Dirt Divas

We had a great ride last week- challenging, but great! It was nice to see so many new faces.

It is the beginning of the month so we are back at our easiest ride. Probably a good thing considering the heat. I wouldn’t want to be pedalling too much this week!

There are a few other things coming up this weekend that I want to let you know about:

Cornering Session

Saturday, June 6 at 12:00 I will be teaching a session on cornering. We will learn the techniques on a nice grassy field first, then take it to the trails to practise. Cost is $10.00 per person with a maximum group size of 6 people. If you are interested, please call me at (604) 892-9227

Burger and Beer Fundraiser

Last year we used to go out for a drink after the rides. It was a nice time to get to know everyone. Unfortunately we just haven’t had time this year so far, but I miss the socializing. So when my friend said she was having a burger and beer fundraiser this Saturday at the Grizzly, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to get together with everyone. Oh, did I mention that it’s for a really good cause? Half the money raised will be going to help with the treatment for a local woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer this spring. The other half will be going to the BC Cancer Foundation. Tickets are only $10.00 and you get a burger, a beer, and a fifty-fifty ticket. Dress in as much pink as you can for a chance to win a great prize. I will have tickets at the next ride-it helps if we pre-sell them so we know how many burgers to get!

This Week’s Ride:

Ride Date: June 4, 2009

Time: 6:00 at Tantalus Bike Shop (if you don’t mind riding on the road for a ways) or 6:30 pm at the corner of Depot and Hwy 99.

Place: Tantalus Bike Shop or at the corner of Hwy 99 and Depot

Ride Length: 1-1.5 hrs

Difficulty: Beginner

We will ride on the road to the corner of Depot Road and Hwy 99. If you want to meet us there, we should be there at around 6:30 pm. From there we will ride up the Ray Peters trail past the high school up to Squamish Valley Highway. Once we reach the powerlines, we will turn right down a trail that I call Mini Corners. At the bottom of this trail, the group has the choice of riding down Sweet Judy, Ray Peter’s, or the powerline road.

I would rate these trails as beginner to easy intermediate. The ride up is fairly moderate.

Ray Peter’s Trail

This trail is a double-track gravel trail that is great for people who are just learning how to ride their mountain bike.  It has moderate incline that varies in steepness so you get to practise using the gears and build up some lung and leg power.

Trail Tip:

To make climbing easier, adjust your seat so your knee is just slightly bent when it is extending at the bottom of your pedal stroke.

Mini Corners

This is a single-track trail that loops through the bush in a series of fun corners. It is fairly smooth so you can concentrate on cornering. There is one dip that may be challenging for some.

Trail Tip:

Keep your head up and look where you want to go!

Sweet Judy

If you are ready for more of a challenge after Mini Corners, try this trail. It is characterized by narrow, twisty, rooty bits and small technical challenges. The first section is the most difficult so don’t get discouraged! It gets easier towards the bottom.

See you on Thursday!

Jen

    Hi Cheryl and Jen,

Thanks for organzing an opportunity for us to get out! Finding a new cornering route and one that for me is more difficult than cliffs and robs because of the flora means another great practicing place!!

as promised, i went in search for the actual name of “mini-corners”. It’s called “live wire” (and because i doubted my source, i went to check it out on the district interactive trails site http://trails.squamish.ca/mapguide2009/dosAdoptatrail/main.php.

thanks for a fun and companionable environment to go out with.

    thanks!
    Tania
